Some of the stations showed minor background noise and artifacts, and there was the usual image softness that is prevalent in all PC tuner cards, but the overall viewing experience was very good. Like the Diamond XtremeTV, the WinTV-PVR-USB2's TV tuner performed admirably.

Hauppauge's proprietary software works fine, but other programs, such as Windows Media Center are more intuitive. The WinTV program integrates with TitanTV's EPG (Electronic Program Guide) for advanced program scheduling. The installation disc includes Hauppauge's WinTV software for watching, pausing, and recording live TV and Ulead's MovieFactory 2 DVD-authoring program. Installation of the WinTV-PVR-USB2 is straightforward, and all connections are clearly marked, so there's no confusion as to which cable goes where. The included Hauppauge remote control works with an internal IR sensor to change channels, pause, rewind, fast-forward, and record, but it does not control your set-top box. The Diamond XtremeTV PVR600 matches the Hauppauge's image quality, but it has cables. The unit comes with a USB cable and an FM antenna, but no other A/V cables are included in the box. Two coaxial connectors (TV and FM radio) are located on the back panel along with a USB 2.0 port and a power connector. The front panel contains stereo audio inputs and composite-video and S-Video inputs. Along with the Diamond, it offers the best image quality of the bunch, but it doesn't include A/V cables, so you'll have to supply your own to hook up a video signal. Like the Diamond XtremeTV PVR600, it retails for $149 and includes a remote control. While every new Media Center system is bundled with a software decoder, do-it-yourself builders will need a third-party application, such as WinDVD or PowerDVD, as the WinTV-PVR-500 MCE does not include one.At 6.25 inches square, the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 has a big footprint for an external USB TV tuner. As it turns out, we had previously uninstalled our software decoder, Cyberlink's PowerDVD 5, and had to reinstall it to utilize the TV tuner. Our first attempt to watch live TV resulted in a decoder error message.

The entire installation took us less than 10 minutes, including getting Media Center 2005 to recognize the twin tuners, select our cable service, and download an EPG (electronic program guide).

You can install the card in systems running Windows XP Home or Professional, but you'll need a third-party application, such as Beyond TV or SageTV, to provide a DVR front end. The daughter card uses an open slot bay (but not an actual PCI slot), providing the second input, either S-Video or composite video. The card has an A/V header for attaching an additional A/V daughter card, which is included in the box. There's no shortage of A/V ports on the WinTV-PVR-500 MCE the main card includes coaxial connections for TV and FM radio, S-Video and composite-video inputs, and stereo audio-in jacks, even if cables for these connections are not included.
